City Hall has claimed success in using waste composting to save more than 141 million baht on other refuse disposal methods last year.

Ekwathanyu Amrapal, spokesman of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, said the so-called Mai Teh Ruam (Say No to Unseparated Garbage) campaign was joined by 184 markets and more than 600 restaurants citywide.

The campaign centres on separating perishable refuse to make compost for fertilising plants in public parks around the city.

The spokesman said that translates into a reduction of some 74,000 tonnes of garbage that would otherwise have been disposed of by other means last year, which equates to a saving of at least 141 million baht.
