Japan will consider extending its tourist visa waiver for Thais amid growing concern it will end next year.
The issue was raised at a meeting between Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and counterpart Yoko Kamikawa in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Their talks were reportedly dominated by trade and investment ties.
Also on the agenda was the visa waiver programme. Japan has granted visa exemptions for Thai tourists and entrepreneurs for 15 days since 2013. This has been a unilateral and temporary measure, extended every three years, with the latest extension lasting until 2025.
Overstayers, however, have expressed concern it might be cancelled next year.
Ms Kamikawa has reportedly agreed to consider extending the waiver while both sides work to tackle the problem of overstayers.
