Phuket has been chosen to represent Thailand in a bid to compete for the opportunity to host the 2025 InterPride World Conference.
The island province beat the other two cities, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen, which also vied for the chance, during a meeting called "Town Hall: Nationwide Pride Episode 2".
It was a gathering of Pride organisers from across Thailand, co-hosted by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and the Foundation for SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) Rights and Justice.
Phuket will be nominated as a venue at this year's InterPride World Conference in Columbia in October.
The annual InterPride World Conference takes place over five days. It is attended by about 600 Pride organisations from 70 countries to discuss the state of LGBTQ+ movements and exchange their experiences in achieving gender equality.
The conference has been held since 1982. Most of the venues have been in Europe and North America.
If Thailand is selected as the next venue, it will be the first time the conference is hosted in Asia, according to TCEB president Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya.
Phuket governor Sophon Suwannarat previously said that two events held during Pride Month in June brought in a large amount of income to the island. LGBTQ+ visitors are considered a group of quality tourists with high spending power, he said.
Another event the government wants Thailand to host is WorldPride in 2030.
It is among the most important events for LGBTQ+ globally, hosted by InterPride, said Mr Chiruit. It is expected to attract a large number of people who will spend big in Thailand.
Mr Chiruit said that last year's WorldPride event in Australia attracted about 1 million participants, contributing a large amount of income to the local economy.
