Marine slain in Pattani

A marine was killed in a walk-up shooting in Pattani’s Mai Kaen district late Sunday afternoon, reports said.

The shooting occurred at about 5.50pm at Ban Pa Mai, tambon Don Sai in Mai Kaen district.

According to witnesses, Warrant Officer 1st Class Manu Kaewmanee of Chulaporn military camp was sitting at a sight-seeing point near the sea in the village when a gunman approached him and shot him with a handgun at close range. The assailant then fled.

The victim was shot in the head, face and torso and died on the spot.

Police blamed separatist militants.
