Volunteer killed in Pattani

A village defence volunteer was shot dead in an attack in a rubber plantation in Pattani's Khok Pho district on Sunday morning, police said.

Pol Lt Col Phuwasin Makhi, the chief investigator of Khok Pho police station, said the attack occurred at about 9am on a road inside a rubber plantation near Ban Khlong Chang in tambon Naket.

While Somchai Chainui, 49, was returning home from the plantation with a can of latex, he was attacked by four men who followed him on two motorcycles with pistols.

Somchai, who was also a village defence volunteer, was hit with more than 10 shots to the body. He was killed instantly.

The attackers took Somchai's 9mm pistol before fleeing.
