Prayut to lure in fugitives

The government will bring into the fold fugitives both at home and abroad by promising them a fair chance to fight the cases in the court of law.

They will be informed of their charges through "proper channels", Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha told a "supercabinet" joint meeting between the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and the cabinet on Tuesday.

Since the May 22 coup, the number of fugitives has shot up. Arrest warrants were issued on those who failed to answer the NCPO's summonses or were suspected of lese majeste, as well as some Pheu Thai party members and red-shirt sympathisers.

These people include academics, activitists and politicians. Some of them refused to acknowledge the junta's authority while others felt insecure about the situation or were uncertain that justice could be served under the circumstances. They fled and sought asylum in other countries.

Since martial law is still in place and the military court, whose rulings cannot be appealed, is assigned to decide "security" cases, it is unclear how they can be persuaded to return.

Gen Prayut, who heads both the NCPO and the cabinet, also asked responsible agencies to create correct understanding with groups who still misunderstand the situation and do not have adequate information about national reform.

He suggested appropriate methods be used to deal with these groups, especially students, to avoid antagonising them.

The NCPO also proposed the government take four urgent actions: tackling the high cost of living and product prices, as well as low prices of farm goods; tangible solutions to corruption; drug and crime suppression; and maintaining social order.

The NCPO also reported the progress of what it had done to maintain order and step up security.

It included projects to reduce poverty and inequality, projects and activities to glorify the monarchy and royally initiated and sufficiency-economy projects.

Others were farmland redistribution, water management, crime suppression, rescue drills, drug and illegal migrant crackdowns.
