Militant killed in Narathiwat clash

A militant wanted on an arrest warrant was killed in a clash between government forces and a group of insurgents in Rangae district of Narathiwat Tuesday, police said.

The government team of soldiers from 45th Rangers Regiment and provincial police laid siege to a house at the edge of Bongo village in tambon Bongo around midnight on information that Arong Duramae and other militants were hiding there.

Mr Arong, who is on police record as a bomb maker, was one of the six militants who broke out of detention cell of Tanyong police station in Muang district of Narathiwat on Jan 13, 2011.

While the police and soldiers were moving closer to the house, about eight or nine men hiding inside opened fire.  Gunfire was exchanged for about 20 minutes.

After the clash, authorities found inside the house the body of a militant with one 11mm pistol in his hand.

He was later identified as Furdin Yoso, 24, who was wanted for shooting to death a policeman from Cho Airong district at Ban Tanyong Limo in Rangae district on Oct 11, 2012.

The other militants fled into a nearby rubber plantation.
