At least eight people have died and two are missing due to flooding in southern Thailand, officials confirmed Saturday.

Heavy rains have in the four southern-most provinces have affected more than 1,415 villages, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said.

"The governors of the separate provinces have asked for emergency assistance and the army has responded," Banphot Poonpien, spokesman for the Internal Security Operation Command, said.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha visited the region Friday before his appearance at the 10th anniversary ceremony of the Asian tsunami.

He has declared the four provinces to be disaster zones and instructed authorities to provide aid accordingly.
