PATHUM THANI — A 22-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in connection with an attack on Rangsit University students that led to the death of player on the university football club.

Pathum Thani police raided the house of Veera Sripong in Sai Mai district in Bangkok and confiscated a motorcycle linked to the attacks in the early hours on May 30. He was taken for a crime reenactment at the Muang Ek housing estate near the university.

The arrest came one week after Arhit Saisalang, a communication arts student and striker for RSU FC, was pronounced dead at a hospital of wounds from a shotgun blast. His friend, Suwasin Pathummet, also a football player, was injured by knife wounds. They were attacked on their way back to a dormitory after leaving a pub at Muang Ek around 4am.

Sanit Mahathaworn, deputy commander of Provincial Police Region 1, said Mr Veera had admitted to taking part in the attack as a motorcycle driver.

The officer quoted him as saying that he and three other friends did not know Arthit and his friends but targeted them after the two groups made an eye contact inside the pub. One of his friends left and the other three followed the students on two motorcycles and attacked them before fleeing the scene, he added.

Pol Maj Gen Sanit said investigators were looking for Rachen Nisup, believed to be the man who stabbed Mr Suwasin, and Poonsak Saokaew, who was suspected of firing the shots that killed Arthit.

RSU FC is playing in Division 2 of the Thai football league this season.
