Downpour floods highway in Chon Buri

Heavy rain struck parts of Chon Buri province overnight, flooding a main highway and stranding many vehicles, as the Meteorological Department warned tropical storm Vamco will bring more rain to the Northeast, the East and the lower Central regions from Sept 15-18.

On Monday night, heavy rain struck many parts of Chon Buri province from 8pm-10pm, causing the highway interchange at Moo 3 village in tambon Pong of Bang Lamung district to be flooded.

The Bangkok - Chon Buri motorway was flooded between kilometres 116-117.

Highway 36 (Krathing Lai - Rayong) was about 1.20m under water, making a 300m section of the road  impassable. Many cars were seen stalled in the water.

The water level at all flooded areas began to recede at 11.50pm.

The floodwater was mostly drained by Tuesday morning, allowing traffic to return to normal.

At 4am on Tuesday tropical storm Vamco was centred south of Da Nang, Vietnam, and moving toward Saravan, Laos, the weather office said.

It was centred about 220 kilometres east of Ubon Ratchathani province of Thailand with maximum sustained winds of 65km per hour and moving in a westerly direction at 20km per hour.

It was expected to bring more rain to the country during Sept 15-18.

People in the Northeast, the East and lower Central were advised to brace for heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period, the department said.
