TAK — One villager was killed and another seriously injured in a landslide that struck the construction site of a community centre in Tha Song Yang district on Saturday.

The landslide struck the construction site of a community education and learning centre in tambon Song while a group of more than 20 residents of Batha village were levelling the soil surface on Saturday.

Meeloy Wanachachart, 50, was killed and fellow villager Thicha Arunboonsri, 33, sustained serious injuries with broken legs and ribs. He was rushed to Tha Song Yang Hospital and his condition was stable.

Suebpong Nimpulsawat, chief of Tha Song Yang district, sent officials to the village to help the families of the two victims. It took them more than three hours to reach the remote community in the province's rugged northernmost district.

Mr Suebpong said district authorities would cover funeral costs for the dead villager and provide financial assistance to the families of the two villagers. Authorities have already given 20,000 baht to the injured man to help with his medical treatment.
