KHON KAEN -- An 18-wheeler went off a bridge neck on Mittraphap Road Thursday, causing at least five kilometres of traffic backup.

Highway police were informed about the accident at 10.30am. At the neck of a bridge crossing Chi River in tambon Muang Kao of Muang district, they found tractor-trailer on its side below bridge.

Traffic on both sides of the road was halted temporarily and the driver was pulled from the wreckage.

Pairote Chamnarnkhao, 35, the vehicle driver said he was on his way to pick up rice husk and deliver it to a power plant in Phol district. When Mr Pairote arrived at a spot where the bridge was under repair, traffic lanes had been reduced. He slowed but a car cut him and he lost control as he slammed on the brakes.

Police later re-opened traffic after cars backed up for nearly five kilometres.
