Army chief Chalermchai Sittisat has called for unity in the army, urging soldiers to do what it takes to win public acceptance and exercise authority legitimately.

Gen Chalermchai made the remarks Tuesday as he inspected the 1st Army's headquarters on Ratchadamnoen Avenue in Bangkok. Lt Gen Apirat Kongsompong, the 1st Army commander, and high-ranking army officers were present to welcome the army chief.

After the inspection, Gen Chalermchai told reporters Lt Gen Apirat regularly updates him on the 1st Army's work.

The army chief said the army plays an important role in ensuring security and supporting the government.

The army's ability to carry out its duties depends on two factors, he said.

Firstly, the army needs to be sure the public accept and understand its role, which in turn hinges on the fact that it exercises its authority justly and legitimately in terms of enforcing the law, and maintaining order.

''If we exercise our authority justly, the people will eventually accept us," the army chief said. Secondly, Gen Chalermchai stressed that all army units must maintain unity and solidarity.

"I want all of you to keep in mind that we were born of the same roots, and uphold the same ideal of protecting the country, religion, the King and the people.

"If we think and act along the same lines, the army will move forward with honour and dignity and will become a main pillar supporting government efforts to run the country," Gen Chalermchai said, adding that the army must help the public ease their problems.

The 1st Army is known to be a key unit controlling troops in 26 provinces in the Central region and Bangkok, and played a key role in staging past and recent coups. Gen Chalermchai insisted he adhered to the merit system in promotions, a mechanism used to avoid problems associated with frustration over promotions seen as unfair by some.
