Don't politicise outbreak: PM

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday threatened swift legal action against people who politicise the government's handling of the coronavirus outbreak and the ultra-fine dust pollution to stoke public fears.

Gen Prayut said the government is mobilising resources to address these problems, but its efforts are hampered by groups of people seeking to politicise these issues. He also gave a stern warning about the misuse of social media.

"We have other issues besides PM2.5 and the virus, like fake news and hate speech. I've ordered authorities concerned to take legal action," he said.

"Some originated from outside the country but they can be traced. If what they do is against the law, they will face legal action. I've made my order clear," said Gen Prayut.

Gen Prayut also told his critics not to accuse him of acting like a dictator, saying authorities are simply enforcing existing laws.

"This is tiring, but I won't resign [as PM]," he said.
