Senators add salary to bug battle

The military and police top brass who concurrently serve as senators have decided that they will not receive senators' salaries and will return their total allowance so far to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.

They are Gen Pornpipat Benyasri, chief of Defence Forces; Gen Nat Intharacharoen, permanent secretary for defence; army chief Gen Apirat Konsompong; navy chief Adm Luechai Ruddit; air force chief ACM Maanat Wongwat; and national police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda.

They have written to inform the Senate speaker that they do not wish to receive their monthly senator salaries from March until September when they all retire. They will also return the salaries they received from May last year to February this year.

Each senator receives a monthly salary of 113,560 baht. ''We want to stop criticism that we get salaries from two sources. We are willing to do whatever we can to help,'' one of the senators said, without wishing to be named.
