Local polls 'on Nov 28' as Wissanu warns of crisis

Local elections to pick members of tambon administrative organisations (TAO) nationwide will take place on Nov 28.

The Election Commission (EC) has set the elections of TAO members for Nov 28, with registration of candidates opened from Oct 11-15.

The schedules were worked out after the EC was formally notified of the cabinet's resolution to organise the TAO polls on Sept 7.

The EC will now proceed to officially announce the TAO elections on Oct 1.

On an election-related note, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam warned of legal complications if the House was dissolved before the amendment to the organic law governing the dual-ballot system is passed.

This would mean the existing organic law will have to be used in its place, which would be inconsistent with the constitution that has now been amended to adopt the dual-ballot method, Mr Wissanu said.

The deputy premier explained that enough time must be allowed for the rewriting of the organic law and for it to be approved by parliament before any move to disband the House can go ahead.

The Senate last week approved a charter amendment switching the single-ballot election method to a two-ballot system, one for picking an MP and the other for choosing the party of the a voter's choice.
