MP accuses cops of rally shenanigans

An opposition Move Forward Party (MFP) MP on Friday accused police of unlawfully summoning her for questioning over an alleged violation of the emergency decree after speaking in support of marriage equality at a protest rally.

Nateepat: Called in for questioning

Nateepat Kulsetthasith, a party list lawmaker, said Section 125 of the constitution requires police to first seek permission from parliament before issuing such a summons to an MP.

Since police had intentionally avoided following this requirement, the summons she received was unlawful so she was going to ignore it, the MP said.

Ms Nateepat insisted she had done nothing wrong when she joined a recent gathering campaigning for marriage equality, saying she and the party intend pushing the issue come what may.

It was indicated in the summons that she had violated the emergency decree by participating in a mass activity in a Covid-19 maximum control area, she said.

The summons was actually a warning to MPs to not speak at such events and to deter members of the public from exercising their right to attend a peaceful gathering, she added.

Amarat Chokepamitkul, another MFP list MP, said she has received around 14 similar summonses for attending various rallies.

Ms Amarat said all of them were for allegedly violating the emergency decree even though she was at the rallies in an official capacity to observe them because she serves as chairwoman of the House committee on political development.
