Former university rector Suchatvee Suwansawat has been named the Democrat Party's list-MP candidate in Bangkok. He will lead its education campaign efforts in the city for the next general election.

The country's oldest party has entrusted Mr Suchatvee, former King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang rector, to lead its new "Modern Education" campaign. Mr Suchatvee was a key Democrat Party candidate during the May gubernatorial election.

Mr Suchatvee's candidacy marks his entrance into national politics, said party leader Jurin Laksanawisit said yesterday as he announced the news.

Now as a party-list MP candidate, he has two important tasks at hand: heading the Democrats' electioneering, mainly in Bangkok, and managing the Modern Education team, Mr Jurin, who is also Commerce Minister, said.

The team consists of six other key figures from the party, including Thanyanon Rattanakueakangwan, an independent academic, and Zeenat Mahamad, a motivational speaker and administrator of the The Londoners, a Facebook page teaching the English language.

The team will promote modern education, in which new technologies will be adopted to support learning, including self-learning and life-long learning, Mr Jurin said.

Mr Suchatvee said he is passionate about the development of Bangkok and the promotion of modern education.

Some of his team members are young people with expertise in education management, he said.

The party, he said, stresses public participation and modernisation as core elements in policies.
