Former House Speaker and deputy Democrat Party leader Marut Bunnag passed away at the age of 98 at Bumrungrad Hospital on Friday.

Born on Aug 21, 1924, Marut graduated with a bachelor's degree in law from Thammasat University in 1947 and later received an honorary doctorate in law from the same university.

A well-known lawyer, he was appointed as a senator in 1975 and later became a member of the Democrat Party. He ran as a candidate in Bangkok under the party's banner in a general election in 1979 but failed.

Yet he stood again at the next poll and was elected a Bangkok MP in 1983, going on to be re-elected several times.

Marut was named the Democrat Party's secretary-general when Col Thanat Khoman was made its leader.

He also held justice, public health and education cabinet portfolios and once served as president of the Constitutional Court.

Marut quit politics in 2006 but continued to serve as an adviser to the Democrat Party.
