NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij has been made the new leader of the Chart Pattanakla Party, replacing Tewan Liptapanlop.

Mr Tewan announced his resignation after the beginning of a party's general assembly at a hotel in Muang district, Nakhon Ratchasima, on Sunday.

The move resulted in the termination of the executive committee of the Chartpattana Party, which was renamed Chartpattanakla Party at an earlier party meeting on Sept 26.

Mr Tewan's resignation made way for the party to elect a new 30-member executive committee.

Mr Korn, who was the only candidate nominated for the top party post, was elected the new leader. Wacharapon Tomornsak and Atthawit Suwanphakdi were voted in as deputy leaders.

Other members of the executive committee include Mr Tewan as party secretary-general and Korbsak Sabhavasu as chairman of the party's strategy committee.

Suwat Liptapanlop remains as the party chairman.

At the meeting, Mr Suwat spoke about the party's preparations for the general election and improvements of the party's image, including a new logo.

Mr Korn was finance minister from Dec 20, 2008 - Aug 9, 2011 in the Democrat-led government with Abhisit Vejjajiva as prime minister.

In January 2020 he resigned as a Democrat Party member to set up the Kla Party, with himself as leader. He then jumped ship and joined the Chartpattana Party, which has been renamed Chartpattanakla.
