Gaga 'enjoys' transvestite cabaret

Lady Gaga, after arriving in Bangkok late Wednesday, set off to watch a transvestite cabaret show at the Asia Hotel on Phaya Thai Road.

Reports said the 26-year-old American female pop singer and songwriter, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, was impressed with the one-hour show and went backstage to shake hands with the performers.

Calypso Cabaret manager Nipon Boonmasuwaran said Lady Gaga's personal staff reserved 20 seats for the show but nobody expected her to show up.

"I feel very proud and excited because millions of people spend their money to see her concerts but the pop superstar spends her money to see our Calypso Cabaret show," Mr Nipon said.

Lady Gaga is scheduled to perform a concert at Rajamangala Stadium on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, the 'Born This Way' singer's controversial comment about Bangkok on Twitter has drawn criticism from many Thai netizens.

After arriving at Don Mueang airport in her private jet, she immediately tweeted: "I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy fake Rolex."

On pantip.com, a Thai popular web board, some people said they were insulted by her comments and will cancel their plans to watch her concert.

Others said there were other counterfeit products in Bangkok such as fake Lady Gaga CDs.

Some of her fans interpreted Lady Gaga's comments as actually praising Thailand as a nice place for shopping.

There were also arguments whether her "lady market" comment referred to a place for women to shop, or a place to shop for women.

Lady Gaga is expected to do 110 shows this year following the huge success of her album "Born This Way", which has sold nearly six million copies worldwide since it was released in May 2011.

The star, named one of the 100 most influential fashion icons by the US magazine Time, has wowed fans with outfits ranging from a dress made of raw meat to a frock fashioned out of plastic bubbles.
