Monchai Boonpol, 30, Surasak Plaboothong, 28, Nikorn Ritdee, 29, and Thanchanok Yaemtat, 31, face charges of possession and distribution of illegal drugs.

Police estimated the street value of the seizure at 300 million baht.

Police said they acted on information  Mr Nikorn was involved in drug trafficking activities. They set up a sting operation to arrest the drug dealers.

The gang stored consignments of drugs in suburbs of the Bangkok Metropolitan area, from where they were distributed to clients in Bangkok.

The suspects allegedly confessed they followed orders from an inmate of Nakhon Pathom prison to transport the  drugs from the North where they were provided by Lisu tribesmen.

Police said a fifth suspect, Nannapat Pimploy, Mr Monchai's 29 year-old wife, had escaped. Police were tracking her down.
