Ex-minister found dead in hotel

Sompat Kaewpichit, a former Chart Thai MP for Nakhon Pathom and former deputy agriculture and cooperatives minister in the Samak Sundaravej government, was found dead in a room of a hotel on Huay Kaew road in Chiang Mai on Sunday morning, reports said.

The report said the body of Sompat, wearing a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, was found in the toilet. There were no traces of physical assault.

It was believed he died more than 24 hours ago.

Hotel staff said Sompat checked in at the hotel two days ago with a team of Nakhon Pathom municipality officials. The team left the hotel this morning, leaving only Sompat in a suite on the 10th floor.

A housekeeper knocked on the door but received no answer. She opened the room with a spare key and found Sompat lying dead in the toilet.

Sompat was elected an MP for Nakhon Pathom under the Chart Thai Party banner for the first time in 1995. In 2008, he was appointed deputy agriculture and cooperatives minister in the Samak government.
