Mums give babies TV 'soap' names

More than 1,000 babies across Thailand were named after the five male protagonists in the "Suparbburuth Chutathep" soap TV opera series, a report said on Tuesday.

The two most popular characters were "Rachanon" and "Puttipat", with 664 and 412 children named after them respectively, Chuan Sirinanporn, director-general of the Provincial Administration Department was quoted as saying by Matichon.

The other favourites were "Taratorn", "Pawornruj",and "Ronapee". Several children were also named "Chutathep".

A total of five soap operas, or lakorn, were based on the novels that sparked the show, a five-book series. They were broadcast by Channel 3 and were very popular. Each show told the love story of one of five kun chai, or noblemen, of the Chutathep family.

The series of five novels was published by Satapornbooks Co, beginning in 2011. There have been many reprints.
