Yingluck "not siding with red shirts"

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is not taking sides with pro-government red shirts, Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit said on Sunday.

He made the comment after Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, spokesman for the opposition Democrat Party, said Ms Yingluck had done nothing to quell the red shirts. A group of red shirts and a group or anti-government protesters in white Guy Fawkes masks clashed on Friday in Chiang Mai province.

Mr Prompong said he disagreed with Mr Chavanond because Ms Yingluck is the "leader of all political groups and colours."

Different sides have the right to express their viewpoints and opinions, he added.

"I believe the prime minister has already instructed police to look after all sides and not to side with any group.

"I ask Mr Chavanond to stop making accusations to discredit Ms Yingluck, and [reitereate that] the government is not taking anybody's side," he said.
