Pheu Thai's Karun detained again

Former Pheu Thai MP for Don Muang Karun Hosakul was summoned to report to the 11th Military Circle in Bangkok’s Dusit district on Thursday.

Soldiers from the 2nd Cavalry Division had invited the outspoken Karun to leave his home in Don Muang and go to the 11th Military Circle in the afternoon for an attitude adjustment, local media reported.

Mr Karun’s wife, Pimchanok, said she only learned from the media that her husband was invited to report in to the National Council for Peace and Order.

NCPO spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree later confirmed Mr Karun was in the custody of the NCPO’s peacekeeping force, saying he had breached conditions of cooperation earlier asked for by the regime.

He said the detention was necessary so authorities could achieve understanding and exchange views with him. He did not say where Mr Karun was being held, only that his release depended on his cooperation.

He said Mr Karun may face a charge but he did not say what that would be.

Some local media reported that Mr Karun was probably summoned after writing on his Facebook page that Prime Minister and NCPO chief Prayut Chan-o-cha was “kui salim” and praised fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra after he was stripped of his police lieutenant colonel rank.

Kui in Thai means rogue or bully and salim is a multi-coloured Thai dessert that became a term used by the red shirts for people who identify with the multi-coloured shirt movement.

Mr Karun was summoned a day after former energy minister and Pheu Thai member Pichai Naripthaphan was called in to report to the NCPO for criticising the regime’s economic performance and is still in custody.
