CDD uses “Backyard Vegetable Gardening” to stabilize food security and reduce living expenses of Thai households amid the Covid-19 pandemic

Just over a month ago, in April, the Community Development Department (CDD) launched a 90-day quick win campaign for the “back-yard vegetable gardening project”.

The aim of the project is to help secure food supplies and reduce living expenses of Thai households during the pandemic. The project has now reached 80% of targeted households across the country.

Mr. Suttipong Juljarern, Director-General of the CDD, has personally implemented this project at his own accommodation as a leadership example. Other provincial governors across Thailand have planted vegetables in the backyards of their official governor residences. The project has also seen massive involvement and participation from government officers, public and private sectors and attracted attention from international media.

In building food security among households and communities in Thailand, the campaign aims to have 11,811,124 households planting vegetables in their backyards by 30 June 2020. The project will thereby reduce by 50 baht the daily living expenditures of participating households, saving 200,000 million baht in total per year.

Project updates are available at the Facebook public group, “ปลูกพืช ปลูกผัก ปลูกรักกับ พช.” https://www.facebook.com/groups/756725805097591. Tens of thousands of followers have joined the group and started planting, posting their stories, sharing pictures, exchanging knowledge, and posting news updates.

Those who have joined the campaign agree it is easy for everyone to plant vegetables at home and thereby help ensure safe and economic food supplies for themselves. Simply contact your nearby Community Development office for more information. It is never too late to start your own vegetable garden!
