Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) has assured customers that the explosion at the plastic factory in King Kaew, Samut Prakan, resulted in no contamination of the water supply provided by PWA and that close monitoring and analysis of water samples, production lines and irrigation piping are currently underway.
Songsak Thongsri, Deputy Interior Minister, said: “Since the blast at the plastic factory in Samut Prakan caused toxic chemicals to contaminate the air, there has been rising concern over the quality of the water supply in the nearby area at PWA Bang Pakong branch. While there have been no side effects on water production or supply, PWA has suspended pumping at the freshwater station at Bang Bor, Samut Prakan, 16km from the incident, to avoid further risks.
In addition, PWA has assigned PWA sub-offices managers to monitor and collect water samples and carry out regular toxicity testing. Customers are reassured that water supply from PWA meets high quality and safety standards, in compliance with WHO.”
Somboon Sunanthapongsak, PWA Governor, added: “All 234 PWA branches maintain standardised production procedures for water supply, starting at the source and on through the production process, distribution and chemical controls.”
“We also conduct regular sample testing, supervised by scientists at laboratories within each Water Quality Control Division, alongside analysis by external researchers, to evaluate risks and ensure the quality of drinking water in each area.”
“PWA is also providing PWA drinking water, certified by the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health for victims living within the disaster immigrant centre at Bang Phli Yai Sub-district Administrative Organisation in Samut Prakan.”
