MEA celebrates 65th anniversary with a sustainable future vision

On 1st August 2023, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) commemorates its remarkable 65th anniversary with a spectacular celebration, themed “65th MEA SPARK the Sustainable Future”.

The event embraces the spirit of giving back, with participants encouraged to donate to two foundations: Holt Sahathai Foundation, supporting orphaned children in nurturing environments, and Foundation for Child Development, promoting all-round child growth and creative problem-solving.

The celebration showcases the MEA’s exceptional works guided by the organisational principle of “Triple Go for Goal,” encompassing Go Smart, Go Digital, and Go Green, under the visionary motto “Energy for City Life, Energize Smart Living”.

Mr. Wilas Chaloeysat, Governor of the MEA, revealed that “The Go Smart aspect concentrates on modernising power distribution systems with cutting-edge technology, enhancing stability and reliability. Projects like the Smart Metro Grid, featuring 33,265 smart meters, streamline data exchange with the MEA’s online system, enabling efficient power system management and failure analysis.”

“By the year 2027, the installation of 441,400 smart meters in responsible areas is expected to be completed with the adoption of advanced technology for distribution transformers under the Transformer Load Monitoring (TLM) project, initiated with the aim of enhancing the MEA’s expansion plan and the improvement of the electricity network. By 2027, 62,400 smart meters in all MEA’s responsible areas will be fully adopted with such technology,” he said.

Moreover, the MEA is also implementing an underground cable project, especially around the construction area of the electric sky train in various routes. More plans about the project will be updated in 2023. And in 2023, an additional 29 kilometres of the overhead electrical lines will be put underground, totalling 91 kilometres. Meanwhile, the MEA plans to complete the underground electric cable project for a total of 236.1 kilometres by 2027 and plans to be implemented in the future for another 1,140.8 kilometres, totalling 1,454.3 kilometres in the future.

The MEA’s Go Digital efforts transform it into a ‘Fully Digital Service’ provider, offering online services such as the MEASY transaction platform and the blockchain-based Electronic Letter of Guarantee (eLG). Additionally, the EV Data Roaming system facilitates MEA EV Application users in various functions from charging station locations to making payments.

For Go Green, the MEA is fostering an EV Ecosystem with a Smart Charging system to mitigate overload issues. The recent introduction of the MEA EV Super Charge, a 120 kW electric charger, at Wattanawipas Building, MEA’s Headquarters Khlong Toei, supports efficient connections to Solar PV systems and Battery Storage, enhancing customer service in Bangkok.

Taking eco-conscious initiatives further, electricity poles from the underground cable project are being repurposed for coastal erosion protection around Phra Chulachomklao Fort and along the coastal areas around Bang Khun Thian, showcasing the MEA’s dedication to mangrove planting and environmental sustainability.

The MEA also embarks on a public sector solar project for residential users and elevates educational institutes to set examples for energy and environment conservation through the “Energy Mind Award Season 2” initiative. The “MEA Energy Awards” project promotes efficient energy use in buildings and ensures standardised indoor air quality, contributing to the collective effort for carbon neutrality in line with government policy.

MEA’s 65th-anniversary celebration embodies its commitment to building a sustainable future while delivering exceptional services to the community.
