Siam Piwat Aims for Net-Zero Emissions, Leading Thailand's Sustainability Drive

Siam Piwat has joined a global environmental activity and announced its environmental vision, aiming to become the first net-zero shopping mall in Thailand.

Siam Piwat leverages its creative strengths to participate in global environmental activities. The company is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a low-carbon society, with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By collaborating with domestic and international partners, the company is dedicated to creating an ecosystem for sustainable environmental restoration.

Siam Piwat Group is a leading property and retail developer, owning and operating global destinations such as Siam Paragon, Siam Center, Siam Discovery, and participating in joint ventures with ICONSIAM, ICS, and Siam Premium Outlets Bangkok. The company is pioneering efforts to become the first retail property developer in Thailand to partner with leading global brands and organisations, working together to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. This goal aligns with the company's commitment to conducting business in accordance with global standards.

Recently, Siam Piwat Group participated in the 2023 SPOGOMI WORLD CUP, a global litter-picking competition held in Tokyo, Japan, by the Nippon Foundation. The company proudly sponsored the Thai national team, which won the 2023 SPOGOMI WORLD CUP, THAILAND STAGE competition, organised jointly by Siam Piwat Co., Ltd. and G-YU Creative Co., Ltd. in July 2023 at Siam Paragon. During the event in Tokyo, Siam Piwat also extended invitations to representatives from the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo to join in supporting the Thai national team. The 2023 SPOGOMI WORLD CUP, aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues, featured 21 countries competing, with the United Kingdom team winning the championship and the Thai national team placing 12th.

With the aspiration of becoming the first net-zero shopping mall in Thailand, Ms. Naratipe Ruttapradid, Chief Operating Officer of Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., presented Siam Piwat Group’s vision for sustainability management and business policies to representatives from the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo and the Shinagawa Ward, Japan. This occurred during a joint environmental volunteer activity marking the birthday of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the National Day, and Father's Day on December 5, 2023, at the auditorium of the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo.

Ms. Naratipe Ruttapradid, Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., stated, "Driven by Siam Piwat Group's commitment to leverage its potential and business network to create a model city that focuses on environmental restoration, promoting renewable energy, and managing waste comprehensively under the Siam Piwat 360° Waste Journey to Zero Waste project, we aim to achieve the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, or 'Net Zero,' by 2050. We also utilise our strengths in organising global events to create environmental activities. By collaborating with partners from both the public and private sectors, we organised SPOGOMI WORLD CUP 2023 THAILAND STAGE, the first litter-picking competition in Thailand, to select Thailand's representatives for this global litter-picking competition."

In addition, Siam Piwat Group’s executives discussed how their business operations and project management have been adapted to support sustainable businesses under the "Above the Ocean" strategy. Ms. Naratipe Ruttapradid said, "We view business in a new context, aiming to operate without boundaries or competitors but with an abundance of partners to create an ecosystem for greater success and sustainable growth. We are also committed to developing the potential of our employees to help drive the sustainability agenda from one generation to the next."

"Above the Ocean" is a strategy that has enabled Siam Piwat Group to transition from one of the leading retail and property industries to a future-ready organisation capable of connecting business, people, and the planet (Prosperity People Planet) as one. This is achieved by creating an ecosystem where all parties in the value chain benefit and grow sustainably. For environmental and planet restoration, their goal is to become a Regeneration Hub, efficiently managing energy and resources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For instance, their Solar Rooftop project generates electricity from solar energy, a renewable and clean energy source with no fuel costs. The company has already set a target and announced that it will use 100% renewable energy by 2030.

To promote effective waste management among the Thai population, they have established the Siam Piwat 360° Waste Journey to Zero Waste project by utilising space within their shopping malls as recycling collection centres (RCCs). In collaboration with their partners, cleaned and sorted waste is then sent to recycling facilities to be repurposed or upcycled into lifestyle products such as bags, clothes, hats, keychains, etc. Some of these products are sold in their Ecotopia, a dedicated area for sustainable products. They also offer customers and the public the opportunity to exchange their waste for VIZ coins through the ONESIAM SuperApp, incentivising people to change their behaviour by sorting their waste and witnessing its transformation from something worthless into something valuable and beneficial. Their goal is to reduce landfill waste by 50% by 2030.

As a result of the environmental activities implemented by Siam Piwat Group, they have successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 18,825 tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to planting 1,981,535 trees. The company's executives concluded, “Siam Piwat is committed to driving sustainability with a key mission to achieve sustainable development in Thailand and pass on a liveable world to everyone and future generations.”
