Wilas Chaloeysat, Governor of the MEA (Metropolitan Electricity Authority), stated, “On the auspicious occasion of the MEA’s 66th anniversary on 1 August 2024, MEA hosted the '66th Year: To be Sustainable Energy Utility' event to promote decarbonisation.” Under the eco-friendly theme, the venue was decorated with waste-free materials, and there was an exhibition zone featuring “good soil and unspoiled water to a happy life with sustainability.” The event also supported fundraising, donating 328,700 baht to the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation and 378,800 baht to the Foundation of the Welfare of the Cripple under the Royal Patronage of HRH the Princess. Participants also contributed by purchasing products from the Mae Fah Luang Foundation.
MEA has been conducting operations with an awareness of impacts on society and the environment, following a sustainable development framework focused on three key factors: Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG). Initiatives such as the MEA GO (Green Organisation) campaign raise awareness among staff through CSR activities, including: Zero Waste, which transforms waste to energy; Green Procurement; Green Meeting, which involves setting up meetings with minimal environmental impact and replacing equipment in MEA offices with energy-saving devices for maximum efficiency; and Pickup Retrofit, modifying old cars with a replacement of electric motors for use within MEA, helping to mitigate PM 2.5 as well as saving fuel costs.
These activities aim to transform the organisation into a global leading electricity business enterprise and a sustainable MEA organisation by 2030. The transformation is being undertaken alongside the development of accessible services to meet public needs in accordance with the GECC standards, with the provision of online services to reduce time spent travelling to offices. The MEA e-Bill initiative is another campaign promoting the reduction of paper usage, which has already decreased paper consumption by 12 million sheets per year.
In terms of electricity distribution, MEA recognises the environmental impacts caused by the removal of damaged equipment. MEA has initiated an upcycling process for expired insulators to be used in various forms, such as coarsely ground to make anti-skid road ceramic particles. Finely ground insulators can be used to produce high-performance water-absorbent mats that have been tested for pilot use within the organisation before expanding their use to partner networks and other communities. Electric poles dismantled from the underground power line project were installed as a coastal erosion protection line in the area of Fort Phra Chulachomklao and the coast of Bang Khun Thian, covering a total distance of over 2,500 metres. The unused electric poles are also utilised to support mangrove planting and maintenance, which has been ongoing since 2004 and has resulted in the creation of a mangrove forest area behind the coastal erosion protection line of over 380 rai.
Regarding the electric vehicle ecosystem, MEA is the first state enterprise to use electric vehicles (EVs) in its operations and has been using EV charging technology within the organisation for over 10 years. This initiative includes PLUG ME EV innovation, an EV charging system suitable for office areas or condominiums accommodating numerous EVs. The system helps reduce costs by over 40% compared to general AC charging outlets. Additionally, MEA has issued a certified label called Charge Sure by MEA to ensure safety standards and accuracy of charging platforms. These initiatives are extended to projects supporting the shift towards renewable energy transformation. Currently, MEA purchases electricity from 13,735 Very Small Power Producers (VSPPs), totalling over 238 megawatts, and has installed solar cell systems for various agencies totalling over 84 megawatts. This helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 190,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
In pursuit of energy efficiency, MEA also launched a project focusing on spreading knowledge to the public through the MEA Energy Mind Award project, which has been implemented since 2007 to instil tangible behavioural changes among staff and youth in academic institutions, creating Green Youth for Thai society.
In recognition of entrepreneurs' efforts, the MEA Energy Award is hosted to bestow awards on buildings in each category under the theme “Energy Efficiency leads to Air Quality Standards.” For over 7 years, a total of 313 buildings have passed the MEA energy-saving building standard assessment, resulting in savings of 46.33 million units per year, worth 180.93 million baht per year, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 26,589 tonnes of CO2 per year.
These notable projects implemented by MEA aim to achieve a Carbon Neutrality goal by 2050 and a Net Zero Emission goal by 2065. The efforts have been driven from within the organisation, expanding outward, and continuing to accomplish a Carbon Neutrality society in line with government policy.
