Bangkok bicycle-unfriendly

Bangkok is ranked 88th out of 90 friendly cities for cycling, according to the Bicycle Cities Index 2019, conducted by German insurance provider Coya.

It selected the cities from around the world, including traditional cycling cities and some lesser-known locations improving their bicycle infrastructure. The study focuses on six main categories including weather, percentage bicycle usage, crime and safety, infrastructure, bike sharing and rental stations, and special events to promote cycling.

"The study does not reflect the best and worst cities for cycling, but rather evaluates the cycling climate for these 90 cities based on factors related to bike-users," stated the company.

Most of the top 10 cities are in Europe. Utrecht in the Netherlands is ranked the world's top friendly city for cyclists, followed by Antwerp in Belgium, Copenhagen in Denmark, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Malmo in Sweden, Auckland in New Zealand, Hangzhou in China, Bern in Switzerland, and Bremen in Germany.

The worst five is led by Lagos in Nigeria, followed by Medellin in Colombia, Bangkok, Tbilisi in Georgia and Moscow in Russia.
