LAS VEGAS: A Nevada sheriff says the death toll has climbed to 58 in the attack on a Las Vegas concert Sunday, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo says there were hundreds of wounded at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on the Strip. Authorities said 558 wounded and injured have been treated.

Authorities identified the suspected gunman as Nevada resident Stephen Paddock.

Mr Lombardo says officers confronted Paddock on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across the street from the concert. Paddock is dead.

As police entered the room, Paddock, 64, killed himself, Lombardo said. At least 10 rifles were found in the room.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a message of sympathy.

The Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand extend our deepest condolences to the innocent victims of the heartless mass shooting in Las Vegas and their families. We stand with them and the American people in this difficult time and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.

The terror group Islamic State claimed Paddock was one of their "warriors" but authorities dismissed that as propaganda.

"Right now, we believe it's a sole actor, a lone-wolf-type actor," Mr Lombardo said. He said a motive for the shooting had not yet been determined.

Authorities say they have located 62-year-old Marilou Danley, who was wanted as a person of interest in this incident.

The dead gunman is believed to have checked in as a hotel guest.

Dozens of patrol vehicles descended on the Strip after authorities received reports of the active shooter near the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Las Vegas police later said Paddock was "down'' and they did not believe there were any other shooters.

Concert-goers reported seeing muzzle flashes from the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across Las Vegas Boulevard from the country music festival and the sound of what they described as automatic gunfire.

Twenty-six people were admitted to the hospital, University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen said.

Kodiak Yazzie, 36, said he and his girlfriend were watching Jason Aldean's performance when he heard what sounded like fireworks. The music stopped temporarily and started up again before another round of pops sent the performers ducking for cover and fleeing the stage.

Thousands fled as bursts of gunfire could be heard for more than five minutes, Mr Yazzie said.

Witnesses said they saw multiple victims and dozens of ambulances near the concert venue. Some attendees later huddled in the basement of the nearby Tropicana hotel-casino.

Officers carrying assault rifles ran into the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

Authorities shut down part of the Las Vegas Strip and Interstate 15.

Flights were temporarily halted at McCarran International Airport because of the shooting, the airport said on its verified Twitter account.

President Donald Trump extended condolences to the victims of the shooting and their families.

In a tweet Monday, Mr Trump offered "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!''

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr Trump was "briefed on the horrific tragedy in Las Vegas''. Mrs Sanders said that "we are monitoring the situation closely".
