Top selling Scotch down the drain

Thousands of litres of premium whisky have been accidentally flushed down the drain at a bottling plant in Dumbarton, Scotland, the BBC reported on its website.

The mistake sparked an alarm at the local sewage processing plant that the sudden alcohol rush would affect the system's stability.

It reportedly happened at a Chivas Brothers bottling plant during the night shift on Tuesday when equipment was being cleaned.

Instead of draining away waste water, maintenance workers flushed out thousands of litres of bulk whisky into the sewerage system. The smell was so strong even effluent workers reported it.

A Scottish Water spokesman said the sewerage system was being checked to ensure the processing of sewage "has not been compromised".

Chivas Brothers produces the world's second biggest-selling brand, Ballantine's, among others.
