Laos to export electricity to Singapore

Laos plans to sell electricity to Singapore through the Southeast Asian power grid, which links transmission lines of members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The Vientiane Times online on Wednesday said senior officials of Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore held talks on the issue on Tuesday on the sidelines of an Asean energy meeting in Vientiane.

"The four countries noted that it [the project] is feasible," the director-general of the Lao Energy Policy and Planning Department was quoted as saying.

Electricity from Laos will be sent to Singapore through transmission lines in Thailand and Malaysia, the official said.

The four countries have to thrash out details of the project, which was mooted last year. They hope for progress when Asean energy ministers hold talks in Malaysia this year.

Viraphonh Viravong, the deputy energy and mines minister of Laos, said earlier that Singapore agreed in principle to buy 100 megawatts of electricity from Laos at 20 cents per kilowatt.

Laos produces 3,230 megawatts from 25 hydropower plants with domestic consumption at only about 1,000 megawatts, according to the Vientiane Times.
