Four different showcases to hit Bangkok

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Eric Clapton was a recent casualty of our unending political upheaval. The guitarist’s concert was cancelled, and it’s not the only one. It’s very unfortunate that the Silverlake Festival, slated for March, was also postponed. We now wonder if we’ll be able to see Nine Inch Nails, Foals and others without flying to neighbouring countries.

But at least there are four gigs in the coming months that look unlikely to get cancelled if the current situation doesn’t escalate. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

After a triumphant half-time Super Bowl show, Bruno Mars might have unfairly been overshadowed by Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “unplugged” debacle, but the fact remains that Mr Mars is one talented, pint-sized performer and composer. His Moonshine Jungle Tour is now travelling the world, and Thailand is fortunate enough to be on the map for next month. Not only has he churned out one hit after another, Mars is also a consummate performer, skilful multi-instrumentalist and avid dancer who composes music for himself, as well as others. Even if top 40 hits are not your thing, Bruno Mars shouldn’t really be missed.

American rock lovers should revel over the arrival of Thirty Seconds to Mars in April. Even if you’re not familiar with this award-winning rock outfit, you might remember who Jared Leto is. Yes, it’s actor Jared Leto of Dallas Buyers Club fame. Actors in rock bands are nothing new here, but Leto’s Thirty Seconds to Mars simply does not suck in comparison to other bands with globally famous actors as members.

Also in April is the long-awaited visit from Explosions in the Sky. As one of the most celebrated post-rock acts, this Texan quartet is more than a soundtrack to some episodes of CSI: Miami. Explosions in the Sky induces tears, stirs deep emotions and introduces resolutions on listening. To see Explosions live is also an experience in itself. April will no longer be the cruellest month when the post-rock titans come to town.

Taylor Swift is set to grace Thailand in June. The country pop princess has been in the news ever since she jumped off her horse, and started penning straight-up love songs for well-documented ex-boyfriends. Swifties, get ready now — you only have four months left!
