The Michelin Guide, the world's oldest and most revered hotel-and-restaurant reviewer, yesterday awarded a total of 34 stars to 29 restaurants in Thailand. The awards were made at "The Michelin Star Revelation Thailand" ceremony at Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse.

The Michelin Guide Thailand 2020 also adds Chiang Mai among its destinations for top dining, alongside Bangkok, Phuket and Phangnga.

Of the 24 restaurants to receive their first Michelin star, 20 are established. The four newcomers are Table 38 under New York's Thai chef Andy Yang; Chef's Table under Hong Kong's 3-starred French chef Vincent Thierry; 80/20 innovative cuisine restaurant; and Khao Thai restaurant -- all in Bangkok.

The two-star winners are R-Haan Thai and Sorn, for its southern Thai cuisine.

Bangkok's celebrated shophouse eatery Jay Fai retains its one star for the third year in a row.
