Ideal space: A green rooftop at the Puey Park for People and Sustainability.

For generations, Thammasat University has been a source of inspiration that goes beyond academia.

The latest addition to this list is a landmark at its Rangsit campus which hopes to emphasise the principles on which the university was founded in 1934 -- sustainability and democracy.

Puey Park for People and Sustainability, which was inaugurated on Constitution Day on Dec 10 last year, boasts a specially designed H-shaped building and other unique features, such as Asia's largest organic rooftop farm which has been built to look like rows of rice terraces.

One corner of the building has been converted into an open-air classroom, where lecturers impart knowledge about democracy.

Also on the theme of egalitarianism, the park is divided into four sections, signifying the four chambers that make up the heart of democracy: the people, liberty, equality and fraternity.

The park, located near Phahon Yothin Road, is open to the general public.

Big minds: Likenesses of Puey Ungphakorn, rector of Thammasat University, left, and Pridi Banomyong, a former prime minister, sit on a bench as the men were once photographed doing at the Imperial College, London, in 1977.

Stepping up: A woman takes a walk on the terraces at Puey Park.
