Silom's niche indie cinema Bangkok Screening Room is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Fargo, the Oscar-winning American true crime classic from the award-winning Coen brothers, with special screenings from today and until Feb 7, in English with Thai subtitles.

Long before becoming one of America's most influential filmmakers with their later films such as No Country For Old Men (2007), Burn After Reading (2008), True Grit (2010) and The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs (2018), the filmmaking brothers Joel and Ethan Coen gave us the crime gem Fargo in 1996. The movie was later remade into a popular television series. Today, Fargo remains a much-loved cult film, and a great example of what perfect dark comedy should be.

The film centres on Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a small-town Minnesota car salesman who is bursting at the seams with debt. Although desperate for money, he at least has a plan. Jerry hires two psychotic criminals, Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare), to kidnap his wife Jean (Kristin Rudrüd) in a scheme to collect a hefty ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. The plan is expected to be a snap with nobody getting hurt, until people start dying. Then enters pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) who investigates the link between a kidnapping and a series of horrific deaths as Jerry's plan unravels. All these characters combine to make this a thrilling, darkly comical ride.

Fargo was selected in 2006 for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 1998, the American Film Institute named it one of the 100 greatest American films in history.

Bangkok Screening Room is on Level 2, 1/3-7 Sala Daeng 1, Silom Road. For more information on screening times, call 090-906-3888 or visit bkksr.com.
