Penang, which is located on the northwest coast of Malaysia, is famous for two things: its historical port-city and rich, multicultural cuisine.

Ranked among Asia's top 10 street food cities, Penang boasts a distinct culinary tradition with influences from Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan, Thai and even European cuisines. Typical Penang food is often enjoyed from roadside hawkers who have a variety of cooking specialities.

However, amid a pandemic that has severely restricted overseas travel, food enthusiasts and aspiring travellers as well as Malaysians residing in Bangkok can partake in the unique yet comforting cuisine of Penang right in the middle of Thailand's capital.

Organised by Kelab Malaysia Thailand (KMT) with support from the Embassy of Malaysia, the 2021 Penang Street Food Festival will take place this Saturday at the Holiday Inn Bangkok Sukhumvit.

The event aims to promote Malaysian cuisine, especially dishes from the state of Pulau Pinang. A total of 14 vendors specialising in authentic Penang fare will come together to offer their culinary highlights.

Among the savoury dishes on offer are the island's iconic delicacies such as stir-fried char koay teow noodle dish; mee goreng mamak (stir-fried fresh egg noodles with tofu, shrimp and peanut sauce); and chee choeng fun (steamed rice noodle rolls with sweet shrimp paste sauce).

The event's dessert and beverage offerings include teh tarik (pulling milk-tea); and cucur badak (sweet potato cake).

The 2021 Penang Street Food Festival will be held on April 3, from 11am-4pm, at Holiday Inn Bangkok Sukhumvit. The entrance fee is 50 baht for adults and free for children under 12. Prices for food ranges from 50-180 baht per dish.
