The National Gallery is holding "2021 Honorary Art Exhibition Dedicated To Senior Artist Sakaya Khunpolpitak", to pay tribute to the late artist renowned for his fusion of traditional Thai paintings and Western art. It will wrap up on July 25.

On show are 31 paintings, many of which are portraits of King Rama IX, HM Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and other royal family members.

Recognised for his expertise in both portrait painting and traditional Thai painting, he was one of the artists commissioned by King Rama IX to create both traditional Thai and modern paintings. His legacies can be found at many important Buddhist temples in Thailand and overseas.

Showcased alongside the paintings are four sculptures created out of passion after retirement. Many of the pieces in this collection belong to the Fine Arts Department while the others are on loan from his family and art collectors.

The exhibition also features 17 works by guest artists -- National Artist Panya Vijinthanasarn, Professor Emeritus Pongdej Chaiyakut and Sompob Budtarad -- as well as artists from the Office of Traditional Arts.

They have joined hands to honour Sakaya who dedicated his life to producing valuable art that earned his name as a treasure of the Fine Arts Department.

The National Gallery is on Chao Fa Road and open Wednesday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm.
