Siam Society is holding a study trip to Kashmir Valley in the Jammu and Kashmir region of north India, from March 15-23.

Nestled in the western Himalayas, it is known as "Paradise on Earth" for its stunning natural beauty. Often referred to as mini-Switzerland, it is a place of snow-clad mountains, pine trees, pleasant weather, and an abundance of mountains, lakes, valleys, sculptured gardens and breathtaking landscapes.

Rich in history and culture, the region is the site of some of the earliest Buddhism, introduced there in the 3rd century BC by Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. There are also ancient Hindu temples built by a succession of dynasties, one site dating back to the 2nd century BC.

Islam took root in Kashmir in the 14th century and is the dominant religion there today with impressive mosques of stone and wood in a style that is unique to Kashmir.

Led by Ruth Gerson from the Siam Society, the eight-night trip is an opportunity to leave behind everyday hectic life and enjoy nature at many popular tourist destinations in Srinagar, a former capital reputed for its impressive forts, mosques and mausoleums, and magnificent gardens.

They include Jamia Mosque, Budshah Tomb, Dal Lake, Hari Parbat Fort, Shah Hamdan Mosque, Shri Pratap Singh Museum, Mughal gardens, The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Sratisvami Vishnu Temple and Harwan Buddhist Monastery.

The fee is 85,000 baht (81,000 baht for members) excluding air tickets and visa fees. Reservations should be made by Feb 15.
