Cambodia's State Secretariat for Civil Aviation (SSCA) will monitor planes from Thailand in the wake of the ban on new charter and regular flights to Japan, South Korea and China due to concerns over safety standards.
SSCA spokesman Sin Chansereyvutha said the Cambodian aviation agency had no plan to follow the move by the three East Asian countries but it would not sit idle. It had plans to take a "softer approach", the Phnom Penh Post reported on Thursday.
"SSCA will monitor this issue. We will make sure that Thai airlines comply with all [SSCA] regulations and requirements," he said.
Thai aviation safety and standards were assessed as poor by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. The assessment led to the decision by Japan, South Korea and China to block new flights to their countries.
Thailand's Department of Civil Aviation has sought to ease the decision as the Thai New Year holidays are approaching with many Thais booked to take vacations overseas, including the three countries.
Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia operate Cambodian routes.
