'New manager bounce' faces stiff Premier League test this week

It has been something of a managerial merry-go–round in the Premier League in recent weeks so it may be best to gently remind ourselves of which gaffers are in charge of which clubs for this weekend's fixtures.

Steven Gerrard will be experiencing his first taste of Premier League management with Aston Villa in what is something of a gamble but also a great opportunity.

It would have been easy for Gerrard to remain in Scotland at Rangers where he has become something of a hero after ending Celtic's long reign.

Dean Smith, who Gerrard replaced at Villa Park, now faces the unenviable task of trying to rescue cellar dwellers Norwich City.

Smith, who some feel was unfortunate to lose his Villa job, is said to like a challenge and he's definitely facing one at Carrow Road with the desperate Canaries.

Nonetheless, Smith has sounded optimistic, commenting: "It's great to get straight back in with a club that is determined to be progressive."

The international break gave Eddie Howe some precious time to figure out how to remedy the situation at Newcastle United.

It will not be easy and a positive start at St James' Park will be important for the former Bournemouth manager. He needs the Toon Army on his side and a good helping of luck would also be useful.

In the managerial shakeups, we must not overlook Antonio Conte who has so far experienced just one Premier League game with Tottenham Hotspur, while Claudio Ranieri has only been in charge for four games at Watford.

After one win and three losses, the affable Italian may already be wondering if he made the right choice to join the Hornets.

The first matches facing Gerrard, Howe and Smith in their new jobs will be extremely important.

In theory, they are all winnable, but theory isn't enough in the Premier League. The so-called ''new manager bounce" which often heralds the arrival of a new gaffer will come under close scrutiny.

Gerrard possibly faces the toughest task with the visit of Brighton who have become a much more solid outfit than in previous seasons. Their current seventh place league position is no fluke and they are a hard side to beat.

The first task facing Gerrard is to get his players to regain much-needed confidence.

It is no easy mission for a team that has just lost five straight games which has seen them slide to 16th place. But Villa have some decent players and it will be surprising if Gerrard doesn't soon get them moving up the table.

For Howe, the visit of Brentford, who have gone off the boil recently after an encouraging start to life in the Premier League, presents him with just the opportunity he needs.

But the Bees will also be eager to shake off their recent poor form.

With only Norwich below them, Howe knows that even with the Saudi fortune, there will be no easy way to haul Newcastle out of the relegation zone.

"Success is going to take a lot of hard work. A lot of sacrifice and a lot of suffering from everyone here," Howe said at a recent press conference.

He knows the spotlight is on him but is confident he can handle it.

"It's an incredible moment in my life…everything just feels right," said Howe.

It will be interesting to see if Smith can get anything extra out of the fragile Norwich side.

After a woeful start to the season, they should be encouraged by their recent away win at Brentford and maybe Smith can harness this new-found optimism into some kind of form on the pitch.

He has certainly got to make better use of talented Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour than his predecessor Daniel Farke who often left him on the bench.

Gilmour has been in great form for Scotland and could be a key player if Norwich are to survive.

At least Smith has not got anything to lose. He won't be blamed if Norwich are relegated which looks likely. But if he could keep them in the league, it would be massive for both Smith and the club.

Gerrard, Smith and Howe are all English and come from different backgrounds but they will have a common goal this weekend -- getting a result.

It won't be easy but a good start will be priceless in this busy period as Christmas rapidly approaches.
