Lamphun Warriors started the new Thai League 1 season with a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Sukhothai in the Monday night's game.

The northern derby was an evenly contested affair.

Just three minutes into the first half, Lamphun gained the upper hand when Lucca Borges crossed the ball from the left for Akarapong Pumwisat to score from within a few yards.

Lamphun held the advantage until the break but the visitors came back strong in the second half.

Sukhothai were buoyed by two quick goals with the first coming in the 63rd minute when John Baggio opened the ball from the left for Kritsana Kasemkulvilai to grab the leveller.

A minute later, Sukhothai got the winning goal from Baggio who used his excellent footballing skills to leave the Lamphun defence in disarray and ensure three points for the visiting team.

The new season of Thai League 1 commenced on Friday night with most of the top contenders having a forgettable opening weekend.

Defending champions Buriram were held to a goalless draw by Khon Kaen United in a northeastern derby.

BG Pathum United could only manage a 2-2 draw against Police Tero, while Port's opening game against newcomers Nakhon Pathom also ended in a 2-2 tie.

However, Bangkok United claimed three points from their first match, routing promoted Uthai Thani 4-1.
