Foldable phones set to lure high-end consumers

Foldable smartphones are expected to fuel new demand in the high-end segment, which has been relatively untouched by the pandemic in Thailand, according to IT vendors and analysts.

Some smartphone makers have recently introduced new foldable smartphones to the market, including Samsung and Xiaomi, in a bid to capture the high-end market.

Samsung recently unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 to the market.

The Z Fold3 supports immersive entertainment with a 7.6-inch display that facilitates multitasking and performance, while the Z Flip3 is a device with a sleek, compact and pocketable design, enhanced camera features, and a larger cover screen.

"Foldable smartphones that empower users with flexibility and versatility are needed for today's fast-paced world," TM Roh, president and head of mobile communications business at Samsung Electronics, said during the recent launch of the new products.

"This past year, new technologies continued to reshape the way we live," he said. "Our collaboration with trusted industry partners allowed us to drive seamless experiences that offer more personalisation and versatility."

According to Mr Roh, open ecosystems are the only way to accelerate innovation and give people more freedom to create their own experiences that are suitable for their lifestyles.

Glen Cardoza, senior analyst at Counterpoint, a global tech research firm, said the ultra-premium segment makes up about 12% of handset shipments in Thailand.

"Foldable smartphones have been available in Thailand for some time now," said Mr Cardoza. "The affluent and high-usage consumers mainly in the Bangkok metropolitan area are the key target for this kind of smartphone".

He said consumers will have more choices with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3. "We see this segment growing in Thailand," he added.

Teerit Paowan, client devices market analyst at IDC Thailand, a tech market research firm, pointed out that the foldable smartphone is an innovative design that combines a smartphone and tablet. The foldable segment is still dominated by Samsung.

"This is a niche segment for high-end users who are less impacted by the pandemic," Mr Teerit said.

He said Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Motorola are expected to launch new foldable handsets onto the market in the future.

Globally, foldable smartphone sales are expected to reach 13.9 million units by 2025, up from the 4 million projected for this year.
