Exclusive titles to look forward to

TECH

The console wars have raged on since multiple consoles came on the scene and the question of "which is the best console?" has been asked on forums and argued at gaming conventions for years. It's a question that doesn't really have a definitive answer, but PlayStation definitely had a "drop the mic" moment with their latest PlayStation Showcase.

Early in September, PlayStation revealed a number of new exclusive titles and it sent gamers into a frenzy. The debate will still go on and people will continue to argue, except PC gamers because all hail the PC Master Race. But PlayStation is riding a high -- for now. Time to try and get in on that pre-order list: Here are a few of the games to look forward to.

FORSPOKEN

2022

Great original IPs are few and far in between nowadays but Forspoken, a promising title announced exclusively for PS5, showed off great graphics and gameplay during the showcase. The story revolves around a young woman who finds herself transported to another world filled with fantastical creatures and somehow possessing powers. The gameplay gives you a glimpse of the gorgeous open world and the battles to be had as you fight enemies with an arsenal of different powers. But it seems what gamers will be addicted to is the traversal, which mixes elements of Assassin's Creed's parkour and the fluidity of Spider-Man's swinging. If the movement is as good as it looks, gamers will spend days on end just running, jumping and swinging around the world.

GHOSTWIRE: TOKYO

2022

Watching the footage of Ghostwire: Tokyo will leave you intrigued and creeped out at the same time. The game, which will be released on PC and PS5, has the player finding themself in Tokyo that's turned into a ghost town both literally and figuratively: its inhabitants have mysteriously vanished and ghosts roam the streets. The player must get to the bottom of everything with the help of powers they have suddenly gained. The first-person game does offer scares but there's definitely more action with the spell-casting and hand-to-hand combat. In fact, its combat director has described it as "karate meets magic". Martial arts and magic spells? Bustin' definitely makes us feel good.

GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK

2022

The sequel to the critically and commercially acclaimed 2018 game, God Of War Ragnarok continues the story of Kratos and his son Atreus aka Loki (perhaps another variant that has escaped the TVA's clutches?). Three years after the events of the first game, Atreus wants more answers to who he really is, but the fact that Ragnarok ie the end of the world is upon them makes things complicated. That and the fact that Thor (who was designed to look like his traditional depiction in Norse mythology and looks very much like his MCU Endgame counterpart) and their former ally, the goddess Freya, are hell-bent on hunting them down. It's also been confirmed that this is the last game set in the Norse era. If you're one of the many people who are still struggling to get a PS5, fret not: the game is also being released on PS4. Expect a lot of hacking and slashing, paternal drama and even more Kratos grunting "Boy".

STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC REMAKE

Released in 2003 on the Xbox and PC, Knights Of The Old Republic otherwise known in its abbreviated form, Kotor, became one of the best and most popular Star Wars games to ever be made. The game was the first of its kind to allow players to forge their own path in the Force complete with character customisation and a gripping story that lets you decide whether you want to err on the side of the Light or Dark. Years later, people still sing its praises, so you can imagine the excitement when it was announced that Aspyr was developing not a remaster but a full-blown remake. And to add a little salt to Xbox's wound, it's going to be released on PS5 though it will also be available for PC.

SPIDER-MAN 2

2023

Insomniac's Spider-Man series is only two titles deep with 2018's Spider-Man and the more recent Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but each time, they've knocked it out of the park. It's no surprise then that everyone has been waiting for a direct sequel of the 2018 game, and they finally announced it at the PlayStation Showcase along with some additional treats. The teaser for the PS5 exclusive showed off Miles and Peter fighting side by side, which seems to imply both Spider-Men will be playable. The menacing voice-over with the Russian accent is probably Kraven the Hunter, one of Spidey's famous villains. But last and certainly not least, Venom made a bone-chilling appearance confirming that the symbiote will be in the game. He'll probably be an antagonist, but is there a chance that he might be a playable character, too? We can only speculate.

WOLVERINE

Insomniac seems to be aiming to become the godfather of great Marvel games. Aside from the swinging-friendly neighbourhood webhead, Insomniac also announced to geeks' and nerds' great delight that they are also developing a game based on Marvel's very own Canadian mutant. The less-than-a-minute trailer was enough to get everyone hyped despite the fact it didn't really show much aside from Wolverine's signature claws. We're going to have to wait to learn more about the game and wait even longer for its release as it's still in development, but what we do know is that it will be exclusive for PS5.
