Northern floods draining but more rain forecast

Floodwater has drained off in Mae Hong Son and Phayao provinces but low-lying areas of Nan and Phrae were still inundated on Friday, as the weather office warned there could be more heavy rain in the North and Northeast.

Chatchai Phromlert, director-general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said on Friday about 4,300 households in 556 villages were still affected in Nan and Phrae provinces.

In Nan, flooding remained in Bo Klue, Chalerm Prakiat, Muang Nan, Pua, Phu Phiang, Santisuk and Tha Wang Pha districts. In Phrae, flooding continued in Muang Phrae, Nong Muang Khai, Rong Kwang, Song and Sung Men districts.

Floodwater had drained off in Mae Hong Son and Phayao provinces, he said.

Wanchai Sakudomchai, director-general of the Meteorological Department, said on Friday that Topical Storm Dianmu was passing northern Vietnam and would bring more rain to areas of the North and Northeast on Friday and Saturday.

He warned of the risk from runoff in the northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phayao, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Tak and Uttaradit, and in the northeastern provinces of Bung Kan, Loei, Nakhon Phanom, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nong Khai, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani.
