The Opening Ceremony of the First International Thai Silk Fashion week celebrating projects of Queen Sirikit and showcasing modern and traditional Thai craftsmanship attracted thousands of guests.

The event showcases Thai silk costumes designed and tailored by 58 international and top Thai designers, worn by pageants participating in Miss Universe contests and ambassadors as well as participating diplomatic corps from 48 embassies in Bangkok, to promote the elegance of Thai silk, at Centara Grand at CentralWorld.

The costumes were all hand-woven fabric curated entirely from the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Technique of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, with more than 3,500 metres of Thai silk delivered to designers around the world to bring magic to the show.

Besides the appearance of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, other highlights included the presence of world-renowned Malaysian fashion designer Jimmy Choo who was presenting a pair of shoes made using Thai silk fabrics from the foundation, and the parade of 35 beauty queens from around the world who were presenting Thai silk costumes at the opening show.

The fashion show supported the exhibition "8th Celebration of Silk: Thai Silk Road To The World 2018", which will be held from today until Dec 9 at Ground Floor of CentralWorld Department Store.

The exhibition's aim is to promote Thai silk and celebrate the life-long work of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit who has worked relentlessly to elevate the status and quality of the craft of Thai silk.

She also promoted the well-being of Thai women by establishing the SUPPORT Foundation aimed to promote local arts and crafts to help provide supplementary incomes for underprivileged families since 1976. It was organised by the Tourist Assistance Foundation incorporated with 48 foreign diplomatic corps in Bangkok. The event is the biggest Thai silk exhibition ever organised in Thailand. The opening ceremony's fashion show attracted more than two thousand participants.

The First Thai Silk International Fashion Week will feature rounds of shows from 12.30pm-6pm including collections from designers from Austria, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands, as well as Thai traditional costumes worn by special guest models and tailored by designers from China, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines.
