Court grants convicted hit-and-run teacher bail

The Nakhon Phanom Provincial Court on Thursday approved bail requests for ex-teacher Jomsap Saenmuangkhot and Suriya Nuancharoen, convicted earlier for perjury.

Ms Jomsap and Mr Suriya were each released on 800,000-baht bail after the court on Wednesday sentenced Ms Jomsap to eight years in jail for perjury committed in a bid to seek a retrial in her hit-and-run case, in which an elderly man was killed in 2005.

Meanwhile, Mr Suriya was sentenced to seven years and nine months after he was hired by Ms Jomsap to act as a witness to fabricate a story that she was not driving the pickup that hit Lua Pobamrung, 74, in Nakhon Phanom.

The court determined on Thursday the two suspects posed no flight risk and freed from custody.

Back in 2013, the court imposed a three-year sentence on Ms Jomsap for reckless driving, but the 57-year-old was released 18 months later after receiving a pardon.

Ms Jomsap insisted she was wrongfully convicted. After being released, she decided to try to overturn the ruling, but all her attempts were found to bear false witnesses.

Police questioned her witnesses and charged Ms Jomsap, along with nine other suspects, with four counts of wrongdoing, including giving false testimony and assembling illegally. However, the judge dropped the last accusation.

Four other suspects were also handed jail terms.
